Globigerina ​bulloides

A Spinose Planktic Foraminifera

Globigerina bulloides 
Life: G. bulloides is a spinose shallow dweller. Although this species is thought to be symbiont barren (Takagi et al,. 2019), there is some evidence that a genetic type does possess symbionts (Bird et al., 2017). This species is cosmopolitan, but is most abundant in temperate and cold (transitional to sub-polar) waters in the modern ocean and also occurs in polar regions and in upwelling regions (Brummer & Kucera, 2022). The species is rare in tropical regions.
Distinguishing features: G. bulloides is a spinose planktic foraminifera that has 4 chambers in the final whorl. This species typically has a large apertural and lacks an apertural lip (which helps to distinguish it from the related species, G. falconensis). There is a considerable amount of morphological variability and genetic diversity (Darling et al., 2017) in this species. Typical adult size >150 microns.
