Life: O. universa bilobata is a surface dwelling symbiont bearing spinose foraminifera. This form is thought to be an ecophenotype together with Orbulina suturalis of Orbulina universa (Spero et al., 1988). This form appears to be uncommon and may be an indication of environmental stress (Belhadji et al., 2020).
Distinguishing features: This species has 2 chambers covering the earlier shell chambers. This species is unique in that it lacks a true aperture. Orbulina universa bilobata can have sutural apertures and can even have more than two chambers in the final whorl (our lab unofficially refer to them as trilobata or praeorbulina-like specimens). Typical adult size >250 microns.

Downloadable Data:
There are 2 scanned O. universa bilobata specimens. These specimens were obtained from a plankton tow near Newport, Oregon in October 2019. Because they are plankton tow specimens, some interior cytoplasm is visible inside the shells.
