Sphaeroidinella dehiscens
Life: S. dehiscens is a surface dwelling symbiont bearing spinose foraminifera. This species is common in warm (tropical and subtropical) waters of the modern ocean. Distinguishing features: This species has a cancellate irregular shell surface texture and often a glassy cortex. The shell has low trochospiral coiling and 3-4 chambers in the final whorl. Adult specimens can be confused with heavily crusted G. sacculifer. This species is unique in having very wide and deep umbilical and supplementary apertures. Typical adult size >250 microns.
